Biopsy

A biopsy is a procedure performed to remove a small sample of cells for testing. The cells are examined in a laboratory to check for disease, or sometimes to see how badly a known disease is affecting them. Biopsy can be performed on any part of the body.

Although biopsy is most often associated with cancer, it can also be used to check for other diseases, such as infections. A biopsy sample can be scraped, cut, collected with a needle, taken with a machine that punches out a tiny piece, or removed with the tiny tools in an endoscope.

In most cases, a biopsy is a simple outpatient procedure. Depending on the procedure, patients may need to stop taking certain medications beforehand, such as blood thinners. It is important for patients to tell doctors if they are pregnant, as certain biopsies require the use of x-rays to guide the needle to the right location. There is usually very little pain associated with a biopsy. Patients will have to wait a few days to hear the results.

Pessary

A pessary is a device that is inserted into the vagina to relieve symptoms associated with mild to moderate pelvic organ prolapse, a condition in which the womb, bladder, or rectum bulges into the vaginal canal. This device is made of either rubber or plastic and is a safe, nonsurgical way to provide support for prolapsed organs.

Pessaries come in different shapes and sizes, and finding the right one can take some trial and error. Before a pessary fitting, patients will be examined and evaluated based on prolapse-related symptoms they may be experiencing, which may include discomfort, urine leakage when sneezing or coughing, and trouble keeping tampons in.

The following tips can help guide the process of finding the right fit:

Once in place, patients should not be able to feel the device at all. If there is even slight pressure, patients should let their healthcare provider know, and she will find a pessary of a different size or shape.
The pessary should not fall out with sneezing, coughing, jumping, or squatting. While getting fitted, patients should try jumping or squatting to see if the device will fall out. If it does, a different pessary will be inserted until they find one that stays in place.
Patients and their healthcare providers should make sure the device is improving symptoms by having a check-up 5 to 15 days after it is inserted. If there is no improvement, patients may have to be re-fitted with a different pessary, or patients may be asked to consider surgical options.

The device should be kept clean to avoid issues like vaginal odor, discharge, or irritation. To clean a pessary, it must be taken out and washed with soap and water. Healthcare providers will instruct patients on how to remove and reinsert the device. If patients are unable to do this on their own, they will need to get it done at the doctor's office at least once every two months.

Stress Urinary Incontinence

Stress urinary incontinence is a disorder in which the bladder leaks urine during activities that require exertion, such as lifting, laughing, coughing, and sneezing. Leakage occurs because the muscles responsible for holding urine have become weak. This type of incontinence will affect about one in three women at some point in their lives. It is particularly prevalent in women who have given birth vaginally, have been pregnant, are extremely overweight, or are in menopause. Although more women than men suffer from stress incontinence, men who have had prostate surgery are also at risk of developing this condition.

Treatments vary based on the severity of the incontinence. Mild to moderate leakage may be controlled by doing pelvic floor exercises, avoiding foods that can irritate the bladder, or taking medication. For severe incontinence, however, surgery may be necessary. The most common procedures for stress urinary incontinence are bladder suspension, artificial urinary sphincter surgery, and sling surgery.

Each of these procedures takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Patients will likely wake up with a catheter, a tube that drains urine, as swelling after surgery makes it difficult to urinate. Taking slow, short walks to keep the blood flow moving is usually encouraged within hours of the surgery. Although patients may return to work within seven to ten days after certain procedures, strenuous activities such as running and working out are not recommended for at least four to six weeks. In addition, patients should avoid lifting objects over 15 pounds for three months after any of these operations.

I got more answers and care with Dr.Smith in less than 1 hour than I did spending 6 hours in the ER. Plus he has help me to resolve some of than than other TEAM providers have. He is a very caring person and gets thing done. I wish he could be my PCM. Shows compassion and treats me like an individual not as a group. Explains everything to me in a way that I can grasp. His nursing staff is very interested in my well-being and treats me with dignity. If I have any pain issues he treats as an individual with MY best interests in mind not 5000 others. We need more Doctors like him. Always a great report with him and his staff. Thank you Dr. Smith for treating me as individual human. I haven't had a Dr. So Caring and understanding that shows so much compassion for his patients.

He was wonderful, knew about a past procedure from 18 years ago that he remember he had been consulted on. I thought another surgery would be recommended, but not so. He said the surgery from 18 years ago was good, maybe I could use a few more stitches. He gave me a prescription for a topical cream and an oral tablet, but said if it turned out to be expensive, not to get it, which was the case. Also gave me a suggestion for something I could do myself. We felt relieved and very impressed with his knowledge, experience, and caring attitude. We made an appointment for a follow up with one of his PA's in the clinic. And I know if the PA has any problems and wants to consult with him, he will remember me. Exceptionally sharp, one of the very best providers I have ever had.

This was an appointment I was Not looking forward to! Dr Smith was respectful, kind and spoke to me in terms I could understand and I felt Instantly better about It all. He actually stopped in the middle of explained to me the possible steps ahead of me, when I asked if my daughter could come in and be a part of the conversation. She is a speech pathologist and Kadle Health Clinic. She is very smart and I knew she would follow along better than me :0) anyway, he came back to finish explains to us what options there were for me to possibly take and he was attentive to both our questions. :0)Also the staff - all of them - were great. They tmade eye contact, were pleasant and they smiled. They were efficient at their tasks helping me get where I needed to be. :0)

Bad- takes forever for a call back & to schedule a visit. But that's it. The good- absolutely very kind staff working at APFW but Dr Larry Smith is by far the KINDEST, MOST CARING, COMPLETELY HONEST & MOST UNDERSTANDING doctor I've ever come across. I have felt he's been helping me thru my endometriosis issue that is literally everywhere.even in "my crawl spaces" so that's anywhere & everywhere it wants to spread. Dr Smith has helped my emotional health due to the severe deep pain & without him I would be completely without hope Thank you for everything Dr Larry Smith. You truly are the poster child for ideal doctors or those working in healthcare. Thank you so much!!! We REALLY DESPERATELY NEED MORE LIKE YOU!!!

Dr Larry Smith came in, sat down directly across from me and explained things to me in a way I understood. He then let me talk and and answered all my questions. He never logged oInto computer while in office, he must've looked Into my chart prior to entering room. I was Impressed that he remembered almost everything he read about my medical history. I felt like his bedside style is a dying art. More providers should sit directly across from their patients and listen. I honestly don't feel I get that type of care very often when visiting Kadlec.I finally felt listened to by Dr Larry Smith.

Dr. Smith is hard to get into to and I originally wanted a follow up regarding a bladder sling I had previous. However, I was also having other issues with my tailbone and menopause. He not only addressed the issues with the bladder sling, we discussed medications for HRT and made changes and he also scheduled an X-Ray for my tailbone. Dr. Smith always takes time to validate my concerns and listen to my concerns and issues. He has always ben able to be knowledgeable, timely and on top of whatever issues arise. I appreciate having him as one of my care providers. He gets results! He rocks!

Dr Larry Smith is an awesome Dr. He explained everything to me in terms I was able to understand without any questions in my mind what he was talking about. When I asked questions about possible complications during the surgery I will be having he replied, "very good question" which put me at ease not feeling like I'm asking stupid questions or not understanding what he was explaining. I have had that in the pass with another Dr. I would recommend him to all my family and friends, also strangers. Thank you Dr Larry sir you are a blessed soul!!

Dr. Smith is an amazing doctor is very Knowledgeable. I feel he is a skilled physician and surgeon. I was very happy with my outcome of the surgery I had and I continue to heal very nicely. I always know his office is just a call away and they get back to me right away if I have concerns. I feel we are lucky to have him as a physician in our area to provide women with the services He provides.I feel comfortable with Dr. Smith because of his knowledge and professional manner, I would recommend him highly

Last time I met with Doctor Smith was when he did my history to me and that experience was wonderful. I had previously been under the care of two other gynecologist that I feel like put a bandate on stuff until I met with doctor smith and he fixed me. He listens intently explains things in an easy manner.I even spoke with him about a pending back surgery.I may have and felt better when I left his office. He will be doing a ladder sling for me and I have complete faith and whatever he says.
