Dr. James Thomas Barber JR., DO

I had four different appointments at this practice. The first three appointments went very well, and the providers were kind and understanding about my situation. This last appointment with Dr. Barber was very difficult. I have been diabetic for 30 years and this was my third pregnancy. Dr. Barbers care and bedside manner were less than kind. Both my husband and I left the office feeling like he was abrupt and rude given my circumstances. I 100% understand his concern for my child - I share those concerns, and worked every single day of my pregnancy to control my blood sugars so that my baby girl could be born healthy and come home with me. My first daughter was in the Nicu for several weeks and it was traumatizing for all of us. So I've done everything I can within the last two pregnancies to prevent that from happening again. Dr. Barber's tone implied that I wasn't giving my blood sugar control any effort. It felt like he hadn't read through my medical history to fully understand my past pregnancies. Well, I understand that this may be how a practitioner gets through to a patient who may not take a pregnancy seriously, I am not that type of patient. Pregnancy with diabetes is no joke - And I felt that every day and every hour. For him to come in and act as if I did not care about my blood sugars and wasn't doing enough to control them was out of line. If he had taken some time to ask me about my experiences, he would he would have understood my efforts and my own concerns were a heavy task that I don't take lightly. It was a difficult enough pregnancy for me - And I really didn't need a doctor coming in in the ninth inning to tell me that I wasn't doing a good enough job. Again, I completely understand the severity of my situation - But given that I've done this three times and been dealing with a life-threatening chronic illness for 30 years I understand that more than anyone.

Dr. Barber has been out of town for our last few visits and we had another provider see us instead, but now that we've met Dr. Barber, I understand why we were referred to him specifically. We were given a diagnosis that was not as favorable as we anticipated, but he did so in a calm, clear way that provided a clear course of action. We left with some understandable disappointment over the diagnosis, but also with confidence because Dr. Barber took the time to answer all of our questions, gave us a clear outline things we should be doing and to look out for, as well as a clear plan on how we were going to move forward, and the exact reasons and confidence intervals that the plan provided. I do not believe I have ever been given such a comprehensive explanation and plan by a doctor before, and it really helped to calm any anxiety around the diagnosis and feel confident that we had a strong care plan in place.

Dr Barber seems like a man that is run thin he pours hours and hours into his profession sometimes I question if he ever goes home. Through his office you're not able to see all the hard work he puts in and sometimes theirs is a wait to be seen BUT this man is well worth the wait!!! Once I was placed into a hospital setting I was able to see how many hours he truly devotes and through all the endless nights he still explained everything to me answering all my question crazy or not and made me feel heard respected and most Imp apart of my health care. In the beginning I didn't realize how lucky I was to have such an amazing doctor. There's a lot more to him and his practice that the average eye can see I get that now and couldn't appreciate or respect him more. I'd recommend him to everyone without doctors like him Providence wouldn't be the acclaimed hospital it is today.

Every person I interacted with was kind and courteous. I walked into the appointment very anxious about what we would find out anbout our baby. I'd had two scans prior where claims were made that baby had some malformations and there may be something wrong. Both the student and the senior sonographer were kind and professional. It was relieving the moment Dr. Barber entered the exam room. He quickly informed us that things were looking good but he needed to do his own check to confirm. He was humorous, which I was grateful for as I had been stressed about the unknowns. He went straight into checking what we were there for and confirmed everything was okay with baby. He explained what it was that would have been going on if there had been a problem and showed my husband and I that those things were not happening. I would recommend Dr. Barber in an instant.

Dr Barber is by far my favorite provider that I've seen for this pregnancy. He's kind, compassionate and very thorough In explaining mine and the babies' health. The OB team encourages you to see all of their providers as you don't know who will deliver your baby. I'm not very comfortable with this as I have had some complications and would like one provider that knows/tracks everything. When scheduling my next OB appointment, we weren't given the option to stay with the same provider and the receptionist said we "will" have to see all providers. When we requested an appointment for the Dr from our first two visits, she proceeded to schedule us with a different provider. All that to say, I am comforted by Dr Barber's awesome care for my pregnancy and am comforted that he will track everything the whole way through.

Dr Barber was fantastic. Given the nature of his field, not all appointments are routine and ours in particular had a lot of anxiety and uncertainties surrounding it. Dr Barber spent more time than we expected going into detail the risk, possible complications & outcomes of the procedure with my husband and I. We didn't have all of the results yet, but we left the office feeling well informed and confident about our pregnancy.

Dr. Barber is simply outstanding, and I am old enough and fortunate enough to have had medical care for many years and with many top doctors in CA and in Seattle. He combines expertise with an exceptional bedside manner. He gets things done promptly. He cares. He goes the extra mile all the time. I wish every doctor was like Dr. Barber. Hold onto him as long as you can. The man works all the time- he deserves a raise.

My husband and I are very thankful for Dr. Barber and his team. Dr. Barber ensures patients are informed and cares about helping them better understand all options available to them. He takes time to explain information and is very knowledgeable in his field of expertise. He doesn't make patients feel rushed and takes time to answer any questions. I highly recommend Dr. Barber.

I was so impressed with the ease of getting this appt set up, the staff reminding me to fill in the pre check in forms so they had all their information AND I was mostly impressed with the doctor. He sounded like he took his time to read up on my condition and then gave me very solid advice and understanding about my next moves. I REALLY REALLY liked my interaction with him.

Dr. Barbers staff were efficient and courteous. Dr. Barber was very thorough during my appointment and explained his findings calmly and in great detail. It was like having a personal anatomy lesson where he went above and beyond to answer all of my questions in a professional and empathetic manner.I highly recommend this provider and am grateful to be under his care.
