Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

We discussed in detail a new situation I was facing. After explaining my conclusions about my observations, he explained In understandable details, why my conclusions were incorrect and what was the correct meaning of my observations. He stressed the need for me to continue my current medications, what to monitor and If there were any adverse changes to Immediately contact him. I understood and agreed with his philosophy not to change anything but closely observe to see If any adverse changes occur. I strongly felt he had the situation under control and agreed with all his recommendations and suggestions.

I realize sometimes Dr. Mok is delayed, but he is worth waiting to see. He takes his time and reviews all the history, along with new symptoms, test results, and has a series of questions he asks to ensure my heart is functioning well. I am cool with waiting to see him, because he doesn't rush and leave me hanging with unanswered questions or worse, anxiety from feeling like he wasn't thorough. I've been seeing Dr. Mok for 9 years now and have been extremely satisfied that he is keeping my heart in tune with my tbi.

Dr. Mok and his team provide a comprehensive and wonderful health experience. Dr. Mok personally is a thorough, thoughtful, and highly effective Doctor and teacher. He explains all questions with answers that are understandable and relates and compares the related science. His explanation of how our hearts and organs function helps make treatments understandable and relative.An excellent Cardiologist who really cares about his patients.

Dr. Mok implanted my pacemaker. My in-office follow-up appointments are always a pleasure as Dr. Mok always shares information pertinent to me and answers any and all questions that I have. Sometimes he runs a little late and that's O.K. As in the past, I have been the reason he ran late. As patients, we MUST have patience with any doctor who carries a 900 patient load. Dr. Mok is fully appreciated by me!!

The ma that took me back to my room was awesome! She was pleasant and very professional. She also placed my holter the next day. Dr was very calm and explained everything very throughly. We discussed my game plan; holter next day and then follow up appointment. Dr walked me out to make my next appointment, which I thought was such a personal touch. Great facility so clean and organized.

Dr. Mok gets to know his patients, is there to answer any health questions, has a sense of humor, and gives his patients the time they need without interruptions or distractions. He is often behind schedule but it is understood that he doesn't rush his patients when important decisions or conversations need to be made. He is the best doctor I have ever had and I am grateful.

Dr. Mok is an amazing, competent, and thoughtful doctor. He is patient, extremely knowledgeable, shared pertinent information related to my health concerns and explained it, a future procedure, and potential outcomes thoroughly. I would HIGHLY recommend him. I wish more doctors were like him. The front desk staff were also very nice.

My visit was late. But that is not because they did anything wrong. It is because the doctors are not allotted enough time for their patients. Dr Mok is incredible, and the kind of care he provides is the kind of care we would all hope for. Doctors need to be allotted more time to give the quality of care that you expect.
