Cesarean Section (C-Section)

A Cesarean section (more often known as "C-Section") is a surgery performed during labor and delivery. A C-Section is a procedure that delivers a baby through an incision in the lower abdomen and uterus. In the United States, about a third of all births are performed by Cesarean section. Most often, a C-section is done by an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB-GYN), or in certain regions, a general surgeon or family physician.

C-section incisions can be up-and-down (vertical), from belly button to lower abdomen or side-to-side (horizontal), across the lower abdomen. Side-to-side incisions are more frequently used. After the exterior incisions are made, the doctor then cuts into the uterus and amniotic sac and delivers the infant and cuts the baby's umbilical cord. The mother receives medicine to expel the placenta and the doctor helps to safely remove it. Finally, the doctor uses sutures to seal the uterus and tissue incisions. The initial C-section skin incision is also closed with sutures or staples.

C-sections are typically performed with regional anesthesia, which inhibits pain in the lower half of the body, but allows mothers to be awake. However, some mothers may receive general anesthesia, where they are put to sleep during the surgical procedure.

C-sections may be planned or unplanned, depending on the circumstances of the birth.

Pre-existing conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure, herpes, and HIV may prompt a doctor to prescribe a C-section. Other situations for C-section include:

A large baby or birth to multiple children
Pelvic fracture or limited birth canal
Baby in the "breech position," where a baby is positioned feet or bottom first in the uterus
Baby with a developmental disorder
Irregular fetal heartbeat
Mother with a history of previous C-sections

Other mothers may require a C-section due to complications arising during delivery. These unplanned, emergency C-sections allow for a healthy birth even when complex complications are present. Problems during labor which may necessitate a C-section include:

Labor not progressing
Fetus switching position during labor
Distressed infant
Blockage of the cervical opening by the placenta
Prolapsed umbilical cord

Mothers should expect about a six-week recovery period following a C-section, including an initial hospital stay of two to three days. While in the hospital, mothers may spend time with their baby and begin breastfeeding. After returning home, mothers should limit strenuous activities such as lifting, reaching, and exercise, and should make sure to get plenty of rest.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is the targeted use of extreme cold to destroy unhealthy or unwanted tissue. The doctor applies the cold on the skin or injects it through a needle to reach the inside of the body, where it freezes away the problem tissue. Cryotherapy is often used to remove minor skin problems such as warts or skin tags, and it is also used to treat some small tumors.

To achieve the cold temperatures needed for cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen or argon gas is passed through a tube, which becomes cold enough to freeze cells on contact. Alternatively, liquid nitrogen can be swabbed directly onto the skin or via a spray, which applies only a specific, small amount to the skin at a time.

Because the area treated is typically very small, cryotherapy is not usually painful. There may be a sensation of cold and possibly some slight discomfort. Cryotherapy is very fast and can easily be performed in a doctor's office. It also doesn't require stitches, because there is no cutting involved. These benefits make cryotherapy a good choice for many issues, including:

Common warts
Genital warts
Skin tags
Age spots
Some skin cancers
Cervical cancer
Prostate cancer
Retinoblastoma, cancer that occurs in the eye

Depending on the procedure, it usually takes three to four weeks to heal after cryotherapy. If it was done internally, patients may feel sore or have a small amount of swelling the first day afterwards. If cryotherapy was performed on the skin, patients will have a scab where their tissue was removed. Keep it clean and dry so it can heal.

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to examine the inside of the uterus. A thin tube with a camera and light at the end, called a hysteroscope, is inserted through the vagina. It allows the physician to view the cervix and uterine walls. Sometimes, gas or liquid is used to expand the uterus and allow a better view. If necessary, tiny instruments can also be passed through the tube and used for certain procedures, such as taking a biopsy or removing a polyp.

Hysteroscopy is often done to figure out the cause of abnormal menstrual bleeding. However, it can also be used to:

Identify the cause of recurrent miscarriage
Remove polyps or fibroids, non-cancerous growths in the uterus
Remove adhesions, scar tissue within the uterus
Identify uterine septums, a wall of tissue dividing the uterus
Perform ablation, the removal of excess uterine lining

If surgery is necessary, hysteroscopy is often used along with laparoscopy, a kind of surgery performed through small incisions in the abdomen. Tiny tools are passed through the incisions, and the hysteroscope guides the doctors while surgery is performed.

Doctors take an oath not to do harm. Dr. Trites did me harm. She is very sweet, but she lacks common medical knowledge, so in my opinion, she should not have a license to practice medicine. She did not take my pain seriously, she withheld important information that was in my test results, and she refused to treat my condition. She doesn’t think the birth control pill has side effects, and she doesn’t think fibroids can cause pain and bleeding. Twice she told me I “shouldn’t have side effects” from the birth control pill. Then I went to her with heavy bleeding that was causing anemia and crippling abdominal pain. She said, “It’s probably just perimenopause,” but ordered an ultrasound that found a fibroid. When she emailed me the ultrasound results, she didn’t mention the fibroid. She wrote, “Your pelvic ultrasound shows no signs of anything that would cause irregular bleeding or pelvic pain.” I asked her if the fibroid mentioned in my ultrasound report could cause pain and bleeding. She cut and pasted the same answer, “Your pelvic ultrasound shows no signs of anything that would cause irregular bleeding or pelvic pain.” I asked her again to address the fibroid. She said yes, I have a fibroid, but “this would not contribute to bleeding.” It’s common knowledge that fibroids can cause extreme pain and heavy bleeding, so I have no idea why Dr. Trites said otherwise. I highly recommend finding a different doctor if you want one with basic medical knowledge who takes your pain seriously.

My direct contact with Dr. Trites as always was exceptional. She is very professional, very kind and very informed I appreciate her and her time. I did have a bit of a problem with this appointment. It was rescheduled twice and attempted to be rescheduled a third time. I understand surgeries and things arise so I try to be understanding. I was a bit annoyed that I arrived at 8:15 for an 820 appointment was brought into the room at 8:40. Was told to disrobing it on the table. At 8:50 the nurse came in and informed me that the doctor wasn't even in the building. That she had been held up at a hospital. I am completely understanding of that circumstance I do not appreciate not being informed head of time that I'm being brought into an exam room when the doctor is not even on the premises. I found that to be a little disconcerting and a bit unprofessional. Other than that I could not be happier with this office this only happened one time and I'm willing to chalk it up to circumstance. I do not believe that will be my usual experience in this office. Everyone here is always very kind and friendly and I feel blessed to be able to come here.

I answered no, but I did message Dafna Trites and she always responded right away and took care of whatever prescription or medical question I had. You also asked if she was my main provider - she is my main provider for gynecological care, though not my GP. She is a wonderful doctor. I needed a new GYNO and Dr. Trites was Highly recommended. I got a cancelled appointment so I didn't have to wait long to see her. I did wait over an hour to see her once I was there, and was the last to leave the office (including the staff) but understood that there was an issue that day and everyone was extremely nice about it, so I let it go. My visit was amazing. She spent at least an hour with me, and I really liked her a lot. My only complaint is that the paper robes are too small.....

This was my first visit with Dr. Trites and it will not be my last!!! She's easy to talk to she's knowledgeable, caring, warm, considerate, thorough. The list could go on and on ..Such a breath of fresh air with health care the way it is these days, so mechanical you just are made to feel like the doctor is going through a checklist during your visit and sending you on your way with no time to discuss issues. This survey is totally irrelevant to why I saw Dr. Trites. She is a specialty doctor for me. A gynecologist with whom I first needed a consultation. She was excellent and suggested I book an appointment for a pelvic which I did. It was arranged in a very timely manner based on new hormones that Dr. Trites recommended and the time she needs me to use them before she sees me again. She was outstanding and I'm so glad that I found her!

Dr. Trites was one of the most calming, well spoken, comforting providers I have ever seen. She was so knowledgeable and caring about my needs. This was a first time well-woman visit and I had to wait months for an opening. But I was glad I got in and was very pleased with the care I received. Dr. Trites has been my OB/Gyn doctor for over 20 years and delivered both of my babies. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a new doctor. She is thorough, kind, and really seems to have concern about my care. She's extremely knowledgeable about menopausal treatment and women's issues in general.
