The receptionist is very unseasoned.  She needs to take a course in "Customer Service" or get a job where she doesn't have to interact with people. If you have a high deductible they only accept cash or a check.  They do not want to bill you or the insurance company.  An HSA card is not accepted for payment.  What a waist of time.  Why have insurance if a medical office will not bill to help meet the deductible.
