I found Dr.Zerla when he practiced in Frederick, Md. and got an appointment to see him after the holiday season leading us into year 2000. I could neither sleep nor eat. He was my savior. He was an excellent psychiatrist who listens, explains, and shows, on one hand, compassion, and on the other, knowledge, and mastery of his trade and profession. Amazingly concise questions, he asked!. His greatest talent consists of going through each symptom described to him and asking you about the other signs that you did not think about mentioning so he could provide a more accurate assessment, AND at the same time, confirm to you that his assessment was correct: my craving for sweet food ( e.g. my cooking a whole pot of orange marmalade and THEN finishing it all in 1 sitting, confirmed that my serotonin level was low! As a daughter of a French trained surgeon who also explained to us children the tight relationship between symptoms and underlying disorders, I was so impressed by Dr Zerla’ s targeted questions! Dr. Zerla alleviated my physical and psychological anguish and despair. I took the combination of medications he prescribed, and saw a therapist, also upon his advice.. Dr. Zerla has a calm, serious and soothing voice which inspires confidence & trust. I came out of my depression and started eating and sleeping again. Dr Zerla indirectly also helped to calm down my then 16-year old son who kept asking his mother daily whether she could eat or sleep that day. I am so grateful to have found Dr. Zerla in 2000. He is the best psychiatrist! I am trying to get an appointment with him now, 23 years later! After 22 years, I feel the need to see Dr, Zerla again, now. I am so happy he is still practicing.
